Isle of the Dead Investigation

On 21st March Isle of the Dead were invited to carry out an investigation at Hamiltons Tavern in King Street Ramsgate, which is at present undergoing renovations prior to its reopening.
Members present were.

We arrived at the premises at 9.00pm, and after introducing ourselves to our host Mick and his mother Kathy, we were given a guided tour of the building.
We divided into two groups.
Group One
Joan, Angela, Larraine, Wendy, Alex and Kathy
Group two
Brian, Michelle and Denise.

Group One decided to start in Bedroom 1, almost immediately Joan reported feeling an icy chill behind her, Wendy sensed a young child a girl who was looking out of the window watching planes during a bombing raid taking place opposite, something that Joan also picked up on, but in the room next door
The name Featherstone was given and Larraine also got the name of Simon which was later picked up by the other group. Angela sensed a presence between herself and Larraine at this point.

In Bedroom 4, Wendy picked up on a dog, possibly a lurcher type, it was confirmed that a previous landlord did have a long haired greyhound, which had to be put down just prior to the new owners taking over the premises.
Angela felt that this room had a happy feel to it, and that a baby had been born in this room, something which the second group also picked up on.
Joan who was completely unaware of what Wendy had picked up in bedroom 1, got the impression of a young girl standing at the window, she felt that it was wartime and she looking out watching the bombs falling opposite, it was confirmed that during the last world war several bombs did indeed fall around the Camden square area, which would have been visible from this viewpoint. She was also aware of someone touching her hair and felt it was a young girl.
The Group moved into Bedroom 3 where Joan despite the fact she had positioned herself directly in front of the radiator which was on quite high, again said it felt icy cold behind her,
Angela and Wendy who were sitting at the far end of the room and were also aware of it being icy cold between them.
Angela asked Alex who was sitting by the door to check if there was a draught coming underneath it, but there wasn’t so we were unable to find any explanation for this cold.
Wendy said that she felt as if someone was literally dancing around between us all, she felt it was a child, something again confirmed by the other group. All were aware of moment within the centre of the room and at one point Wendy saw a light go up and across the back wall.
Larraine sensed that someone wanted us to sing Baa Baa Black Sheep, which most of us did, and oddly enough again this was confirmed by the other group.
Larraine also sensed a connection with evacuees, and Alex picked up on somebody who had lost their left toe, possible through an accident.
In the meantime Group two had gone to Bedroom 3, where Michelle had picked up on someone with quite a severe back ache, Denise felt someone tap her on the head, which Brian found he was getting a headache.
Denise had a sense that someone had been laid out in this room ready for burial, and that this person had been a child aged between 5 and 7. Michelle felt her face being touched, and that a little girl was asking for her mummy.

Denise felt that she was of the Victorian era, Brian saw a little girl skipping around the room, Denise was able to confirm this and said that she was wearing a white three quarter length dress. Brian felt that the child was in visitation and that she was looking for someone to play with, they also picked up on Baa Baa Black Sheep
Denise began to feel an irony blood taste in her throat as if she wanted to cough up blood, Michelle picked up on a cast iron bedstead, and felt that the child had spent some time at a TB unit in the old
Denise felt that when their child had died the parents had moved away, being unable to cope with being in the same place she had died.

Michelle felt a pain in her chest and was given the name Hattie.
Michelle sensed that there had once been a wooden staircase on the exterior of the building and that there would have been a farm or farmland to the rear of the building around 1816, this was later confirmed as being correct.
Group two then decided to move to bedroom 4 where Michelle was able to pick up on the name Mc Keyver, and also saw the outline of a man standing by the window in his late 50’s who appeared to be very curious as to what was going on.
Brian took a photo at this point, but sadly, nothing showed up on it. Michelle felt this man was part of a travelling fair, and had a connection with horses, both riding and caring for them. She started to hiccup at this point and sensed that he was very fond of his ale.
Michelle was then aware of a baby crying and felt that the room had belonged at one time to a barmaid and that the child had been hers, she also felt that the man Mc Keyver had been the father. She felt her face being stroked, something also experienced by Joan in the same room.
Denise was able to pick up on this young barmaid and was given the name Lizzie, and could see her wearing a mob cap over her ringlets and that that her baby had been a boy which she had called Simon, a name which had also been picked up by the previous group, Denise sensed that the girl was quite young probably around 16 or 17, something confirmed by Michelle who was picking up that the girl suffered with her feet quite a lot bunions in particular, not helped by the fact that she wore second hand shoes that were far too small for her.
Michelle was being shown a castle or something like that in Ramsgate by the sea where the girl had been or been taken to, Brian suggested that it might have been East Cliff Lodge at
Michelle also picked up on there being problems with the smoke alarms in this area recently.
After a break, the two teams decided they would work together on the remaining rooms

In Bedroom 2, Denise got the feeling of something thick in her throat, Alex was also picking up on the same thing and Michelle got the impression of someone with their throat cut, but was unable to discover whether it was murder or suicide, the name Guy was given.
Wendy picked up on the name Parker, possibly Jimmy or James, Michelle had also picked up on the name Jim earlier in the evening.
Larraine who also got the name Clive Parker.
Joan felt someone touch her hair then her arm.
Wendy got the image of offal, etc, maybe indication a connection with a butcher, Brian felt a numbness to the left side of his face, and Michelle sensed that the person he was picking up on had possibly suffered from Bells Palsey, Angela suggested it might be a stroke.
Cellar area.
The group decided that they would move to the cellar, as there was a small table in one of the room an attempt was made at table tilting but with no notable results.
Michelle was shown two elderly gentlemen playing cards at a round table, also a man with a broken front tooth. Wendy picked up the name Jonah and Angela was given the name Joss.
Alex felt a burning acid sensation and became quite dizzy at this point.
Angela who was sitting on the cellar steps, felt a sensation to the back of her head and felt an urge to pitch herself forwards, as if something wanted to push her down the steps., or at least out of its way.
She also got the name Horace and Cyril.
As she was about to leave the cellar Denise felt someone standing at the right of the entrance, Both Wendy and Alex picked up on this too.

The group then made their way back up to the bar area, where Michelle was given a man with long hair in his 30’s Brian felt this man had a connection with the sea. Wendy began to feel dizzy and was picking up on a fishmonger, and that the pool room was not part of the bar and originally was a separate building, it was later confirmed that that part of the building had been a fishmongers.

Michelle was given the name Michael.
The group then went upstairs to the second floor.
Michelle was immediately aware of a man standing in the doorway with a bid wide smile on his face, also there was another group playing cards and the name Peter who might have been a former landlord was given.
She also picked up on the name Valerie and got the impression that a piano had once stood in this room.
As time was getting late and unlike us, our hosts were unlikely to have the luxury of a lay in the next day, we decided to end the investigation at 1.30am.
We would like to thank Mick and his family for not only allowing us into their business, but into their home to carry out this investigation and wish them every success in their new venture.
